What is CT?

Computed Tomography (CT) is a technique that utilizes thin beams of x-ray and highly sophisticated computers to generate images of the human anatomy.

CT has been revolutionized by the advent of spiral (or helical) CT. In contrast to conventional CT, which images a slice of the body, moves the patient, obtains another slice, etc., helical CT scans continuously as the patient travels through the CT gantry. This markedly decreases the time required to do a study. The entire chest and abdomen are scanned in less than a minute with elimination of motion artifact. The ability to present images in any plane (mulitplanar reconstruction) eliminates the need for multiple "runs" thus decreasing x-ray exposure.
