HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) enacted by Congress and signed into law in August 1996.   This act primarily addressed the protection of health insurance coverage when an individual changed or lost their job.   In addition, HIPAA included the Administrative Simplification Act, which was intended to simplify and standardize the transmission of information between and among health plans, providers and payors.   At the same time the Act addressed the privacy and security of an individual’s health information.
